External Conduct Standards

Late last year, the Federal Government announced a series of major reforms to the oversight of charities operating overseas and organisations with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status. Charities that work overseas will be subject to new standards of governance, called External Conduct Standards.

This week, the proposed External Conduct Standards were tabled in Parliament. Unless they are disallowed, the External Conduct Standards will come into effect on 1 July 2019 and operate in addition to the existing ACNC Governance Standards.

The four standards will require charities to manage their activities and the control of resources overseas, conduct an annual review of overseas activities and record keeping, ensure protection from fraud and corruption, and safeguard vulnerable individuals.
