Our Story

The NFP sector is a crowded challenged space primed for change. Will you plan for it or be forced into it?

Andrea Petersen and Kerrie Akkermans veterans of the sector known for their diverse combined Yin/Yang 360 degree expertise recognised Not-For-Profits can no longer operate the way they have done. Loss of income during COVID, increasing compliance, declining volunteerism, competitors, complexity of working, cost of living, are just some of the challenges Not-For-Profit’s face. It requires a different way of thinking.

This led them to write a book due to be published this year after speaking to over 100 Not For Profit CEO’s.

Under NFPAS’s 25-year umbrella of serving the NFP sector a new initiative has been born which focuses on sustainability driven through their ‘Future proofing System’ and Mothership Model.

About Us

Future Proof Advisory is the collaboration of two highly experienced leaders who share a deep passion for building a strong and sustainable not-for-profit sector. Kerrie Akkermans, a creative pragmatist, and Andrea Petersen, a pragmatic creative, have worked together on projects for many years – but are now officially joining forces to support the sector in a bigger way. Kerrie’s career spans multiple sectors and industries, equipping her with a wide range of experience and qualifications. While Andrea has dedicated her career to building NFPAS, a specialist accounting practice serving the not-for-profit sector.

Despite their different approaches – Kerrie is a powerhouse of ideas, building as she goes, while Andrea ensures everything is built on a solid foundation – they share a common goal: helping not-for-profits thrive. Together they bring the best of both worlds, balancing vision with strategy, innovation with stability and creativity with practicality.

Over the past five years, Kerrie and Andrea have been co-authoring their book Future Proofing Your Not-for-Profit: A Survival Guide for CEOs, interviewing more than 100 sector leaders and experts. Now, building on the insights from their book and their combined six decades of experience, they have launched Future Proof Advisory – a consultancy dedicated to helping CEOs and Boards future-proof their organisations.

Kerrie Akkermans

Kerrie is a seasoned senior executive, board member, business owner, professional speaker, facilitator, trainer, and media broadcaster. With over 30 years’ experience in change management and strategic development, she has turned around organisations from deficit to surplus and implemented innovative out of the box thinking to generate new revenue streams.

She holds a degree in Communications, qualifications in management and is skilled in strategic and operational management, stakeholder engagement, project management, radio and podcast hosting, advocacy and developing winning pitches for business cases.

As a future proofer she brings her diverse set of skills and expertise to creating solutions that will drive sustainability in not-for-profit organisations.

Successfully working with over 500 clients including Toop & Toop Real Estate, Aged Care & Housing and Dept of Trade and Economic Development she applies her expert knowledge to the sector with relentless passion, energy and enthusiasm. Having held senior executive and CEO’s roles with organisations such as the National Water Association and Australasian Society for Intellectual Disability she is able to draw on her depth of knowledge to find creative solutions to clients’ challenges.

Kerrie’ talent for engaging audiences shines through her work as an emcee, curator and host – whether on stage, on her regular FIVEAA radio show, or through Community Centres SA’s podcast Community Conversations. Her ability to connect with people and facilitate meaningful discussions draws both audiences and interviewees from her extensive national network of contacts.

Kerrie enjoys travel, walking in nature, reading and listening to podcasts.

Andrea Petersen

Andrea is an experienced accountant and business owner. She has been a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand for over a decade and the Founder & Director of NFPAS, Australia’s leading not-for-profit sector accounting specialists for nearly 30 years. During her career she has conducted professional training for CA ANZ, CPA and government agencies, run conferences and sounding board groups for the sector, and has been active on various advisory boards.

Multiplying her impact by employing award winning and vocal advocates for the sector Andrea and the NFPAS team have provided services to hundreds of not-for-profit organisations across Australia. Taking an impact approach and building a culture of numbers with heart, Andrea supports not-for-profits by not only managing their finances but also ensuring their on-going sustainability. Her eye and feel for what clients and her team need to nurture their bottom line and their soul is a point of difference in today’s challenging economic environment.

As a business owner and director she has a keen strategic insight and the commercial acumen to know what organisations must do to survive and thrive. Always one step in front as a visionary leader Andrea understands that staying ahead of the curve is the key to sustainability and delivering on your mission.

As a future-proofer she focuses on people driven outcomes founded on sound operational systems within a compliant regulatory framework.
