On 8 September 2014 in an address to the National Press Club, World Vision Chief Executive Reverend Tim Costello referred to a new survey that found that 82% of those surveyed in the charity sector believe that the ACNC is important or very important in “developing a thriving not for profit sector”. In the survey, conducted by Pro Bono Australia, six percent of respondents supported moving the ACNC’s functions to the Australian Tax Office.
The ACNC was created in 2012 and among other duties registers charities, investigates complaints and maintains a publicly searchable database of charities. Legislation to abolish the ACNC was introduced in March but has not yet been voted on.
