Each year, the Australian Charities and Not-for profits Commission (ACNC) conducts reviews focusing on charities that may be at risk of failing to meet their obligations. This proactive approach helps the ACNC to collaborate with some of these charities and work with them on emerging issues to prevent problems. By sharing the outcomes of these reviews publicly, the ACNC can let all of those involved in running charities know more about these risks and help people with their charity’s governance. The ACNC has published report summaries for the reviews completed to date. They summarise review outcomes, and include lessons for charities based on the findings and understanding of best practice.
The compliance reviews conducted to date have focused on:
- Managing safeguarding risk
- Risks to good governance where founders maintain key roles
- Risks to charity sustainability and compliance
- Reviews of governance among charities that have overseas programs working with vulnerable children
- Governance risks associated with large boards
- 2019-20 bushfire season reviews

The Australian Charities and Not-for profits Commission also conducts reviews on around 500 deductible gift recipient (DGR) endorsed charities that are on the Charity Register, to check that they remain eligible to be registered as charities with the ACNC.
